Creel Survey Background:

The Lake Opeongo Creel Survey began with Fred Fry in 1936. It has continued since that time on an annual basis. The reason for starting the creel was to assess the impact of an influx of new anglers to Algonquin Park.

Many people have passed through the creel survey with most anglers coming from local communities. To the right is a 1932 photo of Norm Bowers of Whitney, Ontario with an Opeongo lake trout.

Over the years, many students have worked at the 'creel hut'. Among them was a young W.E. 'Bill' Ricker, then a student at the Ontario Fisheries Research Laboratory at the University of Toronto.
