Background:
My first experience with the Harkness lab was as a graduate student, sampling wild lake trout populations to resolve the species’ recolonization history after the Ice Age ended. I joined the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) in 1998 as a research scientist based at Trent University, and have been pursuing a number of research questions in the Park ever since. My research focuses on the factors underlying observed patterns of aquatic biodiversity, ranging from applied biogeography to geographic genetic structure within and among species to mating systems in fishes. Major research projects in my lab at the moment are investigating patterns of genetic structure and diversity in several fish species in Algonquin, the long-term effects of stocking on wild populations, ecological differences and comparative fitness of different ecotypes of lake trout and brook trout, and habitat influences on the genetic signatures of native and introduced populations.
Research Area:
Evolutionary ecology and biogeography of freshwater organisms; phylogeographic structure and genetic diversity of aquatic species; conservation biology; ecological genetics; restoration ecology
Graduate Education:
- M.Sc. University of Windsor (1990)
- Ph.D. University of Guelph (1995)
- Postdoctoral fellow Australian National University (1995–1998)
Cross-Appointments:
- Watershed Ecosystems Graduate Program, Trent University
- Department of Integrative Biology, University of Guelph
Graduate Students
I supervise graduate students at Trent University, co-supervise students at other universities, and serve on graduate student committees at several universities. I also provide on-site supervision and training for graduate students from other labs and universities who come to my lab for training and data collection. Students interested in graduate opportunities can learn more at my Lab Web Page or contact me by e-mail or at my address at Trent.
